Theology Spoken Here
Thumbnail Hermeneutics
By Dr. Paul DeVries
Ask yourself these questions as you approach any given passage of scripture.
1. Where has God been leading me through scripture; through this text?
2. What (spiritual) insufficiency, struggles, sins, grace, growth, etc. shape my present reading?
3. How is the text connected, in its context, the book, the author's writings, and the Bible?
4. Do historic events/mindsets affecting the author, first readers, society, or world affect the text?
5. Have I paid attention to every word, its various meanings, and its affects on other words?
6. In what ways do grammar, sentence/paragraph structure shape, stretch, or surprise meaning?
7. How does the genre mold, mediate, or magnify the meaning of the text?
8. What truths in the content/mindset of the text are missing in my life, family, church, society?
9. In what ways is the Lord God convicting, correcting, challenging, converting, consoling me?
10. What to do‚ in God's grace, strength and wisdom?
